The Gift of Kindle - Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device

If you haven’t heard about Amazon’s Kindle, then you need to know that this could be one of the neatest gifts this year. It’s a really cool reading device that is connected for free wirelessly with Amazon. Yes, that means that in a few seconds you can quickly download an electronic book from Amazon.

The Kindle is also unique because it’s battery life isn’t measured using a time frame, but instead is measured using number of page turns. It can do this, because the Kindle turns off after every page turn. It makes a lot of sense. There’s no need for it to be on when all you’re doing is reading. Of course, this requires a specially designed screen, but the concept is a really impressive way to extend the battery time.

I’m most interested in the Kindle as a way to read RSS feeds. I’d love to have the Kindle with me in a location that I wouldn’t normally have internet access. This way I could catch up reading all the blogs and other RSS content that there is out there.

At $400 this is a great higher end gift for the tech loving friend. I’d recommend purchasing a Kindle now before they are sold out and you have to wait for them to produce more.

    Hey Techie,

That’s an interesting product and an interesting perspective on how to use it to best advantage. I saw the Sony Reader at CES last year and was very impressed with it then. The page reading clarity was amazing.

Have you by chance ever had the opportunity to compare them with each other?

    brettbum,
I haven’t had a chance to compare the Sony Reader head to head with the Amazon Kindle. Maybe I’ll get a chance to compare the readers at CES this year.

However, I think that the Amazon Kindle is setting a different precedent on battery life which I don’t think the Sony Reader is able to do yet. Plus, I’m 99% sure the Sony Reader doesn’t have the online connectivity that the Amazon Kindle has and they definitely don’t have access to the digital reading content that Amazon has available. I could be off though. I really haven’t looked into the Sony Reader yet.
